Composed to feature in the full-length feature of the same name, American Lightning (the song) reflects upon the kind of nostalgia Springsteen sings about, lamenting all the ways his parent's generation had it easier back in their day. Combining these sentiments with a kind of New Wave, New Order-like sound, seeks to ask the same question Springsteen did in the modern era, exploring what has changed since then, and everything that hasn't.
